How to Identify Fusarium Wilt

A soil-borne fungal disease that clogs the water-conducting vessels of plants, causing wilting, yellowing, and death. It persists in soil for years and is very difficult to eradicate once established. Most common in warm soils.

๐Ÿ” Yellowing and wilting of lower leaves, progressing upward
๐Ÿ” Wilting on one side of the plant first (asymmetric wilting)
๐Ÿ” Brown discoloration inside the stem when cut lengthwise
๐Ÿ” Plant wilts during the day but partially recovers at night initially
๐Ÿ” Eventually the entire plant dies despite adequate watering

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Organic Prevention

The best defense is prevention. These organic methods help keep fusarium wilt from becoming a problem in the first place.

๐ŸŒฟ Plant resistant varieties (look for 'F' or 'VF' on seed packets)
๐ŸŒฟ Practice 3-4 year crop rotation โ€” don't plant same family in same spot
๐ŸŒฟ Maintain soil pH between 6.5-7.0 (fusarium prefers acidic soil)
๐ŸŒฟ Add compost and beneficial microbes to suppress soil pathogens
๐ŸŒฟ Solarize soil in summer (cover with clear plastic for 4-6 weeks)

๐Ÿ’Š Organic Treatment

If fusarium wilt are already present, these organic treatments can help get them under control without synthetic chemicals.

๐Ÿงช There is no cure for infected plants โ€” remove and destroy them immediately
๐Ÿงช Do NOT compost infected plant material
๐Ÿงช Solarize the affected bed before replanting
๐Ÿงช Inoculate soil with mycorrhizal fungi and Trichoderma to suppress fusarium
๐Ÿงช Consider growing in containers with fresh soil/potting mix if bed is contaminated
